Just a few pros and cons of homeschooling

Did you know that homeschooling grows by 7 to 15% each year? This means that there are currently close to 2 million children being homeschooled. While the fact these children are doing well on standardized tests and in college may be all that you need to know in order to want to set out to homeschool your own children, there are definitely a lot of pros and cons that you should also know about. These include:

  1. Homeschool children can learn about whatever they want. Of course, the basics are also covered, but just at different ages. This is based upon the child’s ability, maturity and interests.
  2. Homeschooling parents have a lot of freedom. This is because they do not have to deal with school hours, homework and the school calendar being dictated by someone other than your family. As such, families have a lot more time to foster bonds between one another, which is especially beneficial to teens and children who are being rebellious or destructive. These and other challenging obstacles and transitions can then be worked through as a family since homeschooling provides a stabilizing factor.
  3. There is no peer pressure, competition, boredom or bullies to deal with. Instead, homeschool children are able to dress, act and think however they like without worrying about these things.
  4. Studies show that rest is an important part of children’s emotional and physical well-being. This is why early morning classes are detrimental to children who are not morning people. As a homeschooling family you can choose to live by whatever schedule works best for you and your children.
  5. In most public school classrooms less than 1 hour per day is spent on learning. This is why these children have to do a lot of homework every night. On the other hand, homeschool children do not have to spend their time doing busy work or homework. Homeschool children are also able to do the work that a public school child does in a few weeks in just a few hours.
