Dealing with your unschooling doubts
August 7th, 2007 (General Information)
If you are like me, you tend to watch what your homeschool child is and is not doing. After all, as homeschool parents we know that our chilodren do not have to be tested in order for learning to prove its value. However, if you take this a step further and unschool your child, then you may sometimes find that you doubt the fact that worksheets and tests are not needed in order for your child to be able to learn. This may be because unschooling does not seem natural to you. However, you should know that it really is. In fact, a lot of children throughout history have learned in this way. These children spent their days working beside their parents. Nevertheless, since most children now spend the majority of their day in a brick and mortar building this form of learning seems to be almost “expected” anymore. As such, we tend to find ourselves concerned that our children are not doing the things that we expect them to do. This may especially cause doubts whenever we see just how different our family’s daily activities are when compared to even our own childhood.
Relax! There is a lot of great joy to be found in unschooling our children. Our families are able to find things that we are interested in and then spend as much time as we like learning about it. This learning is exciting because it is not being forced upon our children and does not simply come in the form of dull worksheets and tests.
There may be days when you find it difficult to believe that any learning is even taking place, but it is. Just take a moment to think about the children who are being forced to sit still and learn what they are not interested in each day. Then look at how excited your child is to learn. Every child deserves this opportunity but, unfortunately, not every child is able to get it. Moments of thoughtful insight such as this will make you confident that you are doing the right thing for your child.
