At what age can children do schoolwork by themselves?

This is a question that I’m currently struggling with. While my daughter isn’t able to read yet, most of her schoolwork doesn’t require any reading. Things like math, reviewing site words, etc. These are things that she can do by herself. Yet these are things that she still wants me to do with her.

I may or may not have mentioned this before but I’m currently taking a Seminary course online - trying to move on with my goals in life now that my daughter is a bit older. However, I’m finding it difficult to find time to study. As a single mother who is dedicated to staying home and homeschooling her daughter, I have to work a lot in order to pay all of our bills since there is no child support or any other funds coming into our home. Currently I’m involved in a lot of stuff that is more time consuming than brain power consuming - I hope that makes sense. So, I’m having a hard time trying to find time to study and prepare for my classes.

Well, today I got to the point that I realized just how much time I’m “wasting” (not really the right word but you’ll see what I’m getting at) sitting there staring into space as my daughter does her schoolwork that she doesn’t want me to help with but doesn’t want me to leave her side either. So, I pulled out my Seminary work and got some studying done. Of course, it wasn’t uninterrupted but that’s ok as long as it’s getting done.

My point…

Is this normal for an almost 6-year-old to want you to sit there but not help her? If so, how much longer until she won’t care if I’m there or not? In the mean time, is there anything wrong with me doing something else while sitting there?

My view on all of this…

If she wants me to sit there, then she needs to allow me to do something and studying with her is what I plan to do. I guess I should enjoy things for a while. As such, I really don’t think that I’m doing anything wrong.
