Penmanship Tips

A lot of children need to have some tactial way to help them learn to write. This is where it is helpful to use the following activity. For this activity you will need a glass roasting pan, salt and a freezer zip bag for saving the salt so that you can use it again later. What you are going to want to do is put enough salt into the pan so that whenever you draw the letters they actually appear.

If you are trying to teach your child the directions of letters, you may wish to use a white marker on dark paper. This will allow you to draw points on letters with arrows in order to show your child which way they should go next.

It is also a good idea to use D’Nealian font whenever you are teaching your child to write. This will help to eliminate a lot of reversals in the letters. There are lots of places online where you can create free, tracer pages with the letters that you are working on.

Whenever you are deciding upon which letters to have your child learn to write first, you should consider teaching them to write the vowels first. From there, the next group of letters they should learn are from their names. From then on your child should be able to write almost anything that comes their way.
