The pros and cons of homeschooling

If you are considering homeschooling your child, then you should know that you will be in good company. Today there are approximately 2 million children being homeschooled. Of course, like anything else, there are both advantages and disadvantages that you must consider before you get started.

Some of the advantages include:

  1. You will have a more flexible schedule.
  2. Your child will benefit from being able to get as much individual attention as they require.
  3. Everyone, including your extended family, will get involved with your child’s education.
  4. Your child will not face any peer pressure or other negative influences that they would encounter in the public school system.
  5. Your child can learn at their own pace instead of having to either keep up with or wait for their classmates.

Some of the disadvantages include:

  1. As a parent you can be too strict or too lenient.
  2. Your child may not get to socialize with others their own age but there is not a lot of socialization actually taking place in school anyway.
  3. You may not feel like you have the skills, academic knowledge or teaching ability to homeschool your children but there are plenty of resources to help you out here.
  4. You may feel like you do not have time away from your children or alone.
  5. Your family and friends may not understand your choice to homeschool and thus you may have to deal with opposition.
