The homeschooling year
July 26th, 2007 (General Information)
With the end of summer drawing ever closer, it’s time to start thinking about the new school year that lies ahead. I’ll admit that I don’t do a lot of planning for anything. I know that I should, but it just doesn’t work well for my daughter and I. In some regards we’re unschoolers at heart but if we don’t do some structured learning I begin worrying. I know that I’m not the only one that’s like this either. I guess that’s why we’ve spent the summer working on learning how to read. Originally we began with the goal of having her be able to read by the end of the summer. Did we succeed? No. Does it really matter? No. My point here is that as long as we continue to learn and to grow in our knowledge, it doesn’t really matter how fast we learn something or how scheduled we are. With this in mind I must also say that we really need to relax as we head into this new school year. This is something that I’m really starting to learn in my life and it’s been laid on my heart to share with you here. So many times we just rush through life without really taking the time to enjoy it. We are pushing our children to rush through life too and not allowing them to be kids. Unfortunately, this is especially true with the traditional school system, but we can also be guilty of this as homeschoolers as well. Take a moment to look at your life and your lifestyle: whether it be work, home life, homeschool, extracurricular activities or whatever else you are doing. Make sure that you are not rushing through life and if you’re a Christian make sure God is #1 and your family is #2. With this as your goal for this school year, everything else will be just secondary. Good luck & God bless!
